Name Change Procedure in India

The name change procedure involves the following steps: Affidavit submission, an announcement published in the newspaper and a notification published in the Gazette of India. While following these steps, the applicant will require certain documents attested by the Judicial Magistrate/Notary.

  • Step 1: Affidavit for Name Change

    If you want to change you name, firstly you need to make an affidavit for Name Change in local Notary. It must contain your Old name, the New name and must also mention the reason for name change along with applicant details such as your Husband’s/Father’s name, Address and Age Proof etc.

  • Step 2: To Place an Advertisement

    You need to Publish news of your Name Change as an Advertisement in two local newspapers i.e. one in the Regional Language\Hindi and another one in English newspaper.

  • Step 3: Gazette Notification

    After submitting an initial name change application, your name will be published in the official national gazette. We will track the publication daily. Upon publication, we will send you a copy of the Official Gazette through courier.

Documents Required for Name Change

  • An affidavit on a stamp paper
  • The original newspaper with the name change advertisement
  • The prescribed proforma in printed format, duly signed by the applicant and two witnesses
  • Two passport-size photographs
  • Photocopies of valid ID proof ( PAN card, Aadhaar card, or passport)
  • A CD with a soft copy of the application in .docx format duly filled
  • A letter stating that the content in the hard and soft copy of the application is true
  • A request letter along with the registration fee to the authority
